What is Misophonia?
Misophonia and misokinesia—collectively referred to as “misophonia” throughout—are neurological conditions just beginning to be understood. Their essence is a sense that certain stimuli, usually sights or sounds, can impinge on the very core of one’s being—can “rip right through one’s senses”—and a corresponding intense negative reaction.
Recent research has linked misophonia to mirror neurons and parts of the brain that distinguish between internal and external stimuli, as well as the amygdala, which is involved in the fight or flight response.
